Speaker Zone
Accepted Speakers
Please be aware that the from 20 April 2012 you are now unable to make changes to your paper. If you require to make any changes from now you will need to email Leishman Associates. You are still able to view your final paper so please log in to the speaker zone to ensure it is correct.
We require a small biography from each author for the handbook, if you have not supplied this during the time you were able to edit your paper then please email Leishman Associates with your biography along with the paper number & title so we can ensure it is included.
Please also be aware if you have not registered and have not contacted Leishman Associates to why this has not occurred, you will be removed from the program and replaced.
Speakers have now been notified
Thank you to all that have submitted a full paper for the 2012 ANZ Conference.
All speakers have now been notified of their final paper submission result.
Please be aware that any accepted speaker that has not registered for the 2012 ANZ Conference by 19 April 2012 will be removed from the conference program and will not be published in the conference proceedings.
All registered delegates who have an oral posters full papers will be included in the conference proceedings.
If you need to make changes to your final paper please click here for instructions. (All changes must be made by 19 April 2012).

2012 ANZ Paper Guidelines and Paper Template
Conference Themes
Supporting our Structures – Advances and case studies in piling, footings/foundations, basements and deep excavations, ground improvement, slope design, retaining walls, soil dynamics, pavements, characterisation of recycled materials, characterisation of problematic soils, material testing, constitutive modelling and unsaturated flow and coupled processes.
Evolving Geotechnics & Site Characterisation – New ideas and developments within ground engineering regarding soil mechanics, rock mechanics and engineering geology. This encompasses sustainable design, unsaturated soil and rock mechanics, carbon geo-sequestration, micro-mechanical and nano-level modelling of geomaterials, the bio-geo interface, better use of resources, new constitutive models, theoretical, numerical and laboratory modelling, geothermal energy, innovative geo-structural systems, improved cost-effective techniques, theories and materials in ground engineering and non-destructive testing and subsurface characterization.
Mining and Underground Geotechnics – Current state and advances in mining geotechnics including open pit or underground mining and applications to civil underground geotechnics, including mining-associated infrastructure and tunnelling, dewatering, mine support design and highly loaded dynamic foundations.
Sustainable Geotechnics and Geo-Environmental Engineering in a Resource Hungry World – This stream encompasses ground engineering and its relationship to our living, working and recreational environment; with the application of geotechnical engineering to environmental control; geotechnical aspects of climate change; engineering of environmental projects that include soil, groundwater, waste containment, site remediation, water storage, and use of geosynthetics among other examples.
Near-shore and Off-shore Geotechnics – This stream relates to the development of near-shore and off-shore facilities. This may include the assessment and mitigation of coastline erosion and retreat, the geotechnical challenges of constructing near-shore desalination plants, tidal power generation, off-shore platforms and reclamation projects.
Geo-Hazards and Risk – Risk based modelling and assessment, applications and case studies based around project risk management, commercial and legislative risk and changes for our industry.
Abstract and Paper Preparation
All abstract submissions will be subject to review. Authors should ensure that the following criteria are met in their abstract submission:
- The topic is relevant and important to the chosen theme
- Subject matter is original or innovative
- Paper adds to the knowledge of delegates
All authors of abstracts accepted for presentation will be required to complete a full paper for publication in the conference proceedings. Authors will receive full paper templates and guidelines if their abstract is approved. Papers must be restricted to 6 pages in length and will be double peer reviewed. The full paper must be submitted no later than 8 January 2012. Reviewed papers will be provided to delegates on CD and via the conference website.
Authors are reminded that all papers must be original and must not have been published elsewhere. Once selected for inclusion in the conference program, papers become the property of ANZ 2012 Geomechanics Conference.
Authors of some selected papers will be invited to resubmit an extended version to be published in a special issue of the International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering. In addition, papers of particular relevance to the Region will be included in the AGS Australian Geomechanics Journal.
ORAL PRESENTATIONS
Authors selected to present their papers via oral presentation will need to prepare an electronic slide show based on their paper. Oral presentations will be allocated fifteen minutes, plus an allowance for questions and answers to be held at the conclusion of each presentation or session (time permitting) in the conference program.
POSTER PRESENTATIONS
Authors wishing to present their paper by visual poster display instead of an oral presentation will need to ensure that their actual poster display does not exceed 1.5m high x 0.95m wide. These will be mounted on a panel in the Trade Exhibition area, with relevant poster question and answer session times for authors allocated in the program. Full poster preparation guidelines will be provided.
PAPER AWARDS
In an effort to recognise outstanding presentations, at the close of the 2012 conference the Australian Geomechanics Society will be issuing awards for:
- Best Paper
- Best Poster
- Best Paper, Young Professional – To be eligible for this category ALL authors must be under the age of 35.
- Authors are to nominate their inclusion in the above categories at time of abstract submission.
It is the responsibility of the presenting author to ensure that the abstract is submitted correctly. The conference managers will not be held responsible for abstract submissions not received via the online submission process, or for submission errors caused by internet service outages, hardware or software delays, power outages or unforeseen events. Faxed or mailed abstracts on diskettes/CD will not be accepted. If you are unable to submit via the website please contact the conference managers via email: nicole@leishman-associates.com.au.
